The Sleep Study
At NYX SLEEP, we provide an attended overnight sleep study or nocturnal
polysomnogram, which is considered the "gold standard diagnostic
approach" in sleep medicine. A variety of sensors are used
to monitor sleep patterns by digitally recording multiple types
of diagnostic information. This includes but is not limited to brain
wave activity (EEG), eye, leg and muscle movement, airflow, blood
oxygen levels, snoring sounds, heart rate (EKG) and body position.
These sensors are applied by a qualified Sleep Technologist, who
will monitor the patient and data recording through out the night
to ensure the quality of the study. The diagnostic information is
then interpreted by our clinical director who is Board Certified
in Sleep Medicine. Referring physicians receive a prompt and comprehensive
sleep study report including treatment options and recommendations.
The Procedure You will be scheduled to arrive at a NYX Sleep Center (Pasadena, Santa Clarita or Conejo Valley) at 9:45 or 10:30 PM. You will be asked to change into your sleeping clothes and then the technologist will apply the respective sensors and explain the overnight procedure to you in detail. You will then be asked to relax in your room by reading or watching TV until you are ready to go to sleep. When you are ready, you go to sleep, the sleep technologist begins the digital recording of your sleep and closely monitors you through out the night. In the morning the sleep technologist will remove the various sensors and you may take a shower if you like before leaving. The test results will be forwarded to your physician within a few days of completing your sleep study.
Treatment Options:
- Oral Appliances that reposition the lower jaw and the tongue
are also helpful to some with mild to moderate sleep apnea.
- CPAP Study involves the wearing of a mask over the nose or mouth
during sleep. Air pressure is applied to the upper airway, preventing
it from collapsing during sleep.
- Surgeries to increase the size of the airway include removal
of adenoids and tonsils, nasals polyps and other growths, or other
tissue in the airway and correction of structural deformities.
- Life-style Changes are an important part of a treatment program
and includes weight loss, cease usage of alcohol and sleeping
pills, and change of sleeping patterns.
Customer Comfort. Your ability to sleep
through the night is key to a good quality sleep study. At NYX Sleep
Disorders Centers we accommodate this with hotel-quality rooms.
Each room is specially designed to provide comfort and quietness
in achieving excellent study results and customer satisfaction.
Insurance Coverage. Medicare and most private insurance plans pay all or most of the cost of a sleep study. Prior to the study we work with you and your insurance plan to provide estimates of out-of-pocket expenses.
